All Around Europe : Local Airports Part I

This post is dedicated to all European budget airlines lovers!

Airport - is the important place. This is where our travelling starts and ended. If we could not know where is the airport and how to get to the airport, than our travelling will be a mess.

Since I travel a lot with European budget airline,  I have to invest more time to look for the information regarding the airports used in budget airports, especially the location and how to get there (most important!). Most of the budget airline (esp. Ryan Air) are using local airports which is located far (away) from the city. Beside the location, these local airports also do not have varieties of public transportation access. Therefore, I decided to compile the information regarding these-out-of-nowhere local airports in Europe. I hope it could help all European budget airlines lovers! :)

After did some listing, I realised there will be too much information here - that might make you explode. Therefore, I decided to divide the post into 2 parts, Part I will be mainly for local airport in Germany (as my travelling mostly started from Germany) and Part II for other countries in Europe.

Happy reading, travelers!

IMPORTANT WARNING: Do plans your schedule to match with the local transportation from your start point to the airport. If you missed it, high chance you will miss your flight (and miss your travelling time. Ouch.).

Local Airports in Germany

Karlsruhe - Baden-Baden (FKB)
Address : Victoria Boulevard C 106, 77836 Rheinmunster, Germany

It is an international airports that is often used by budget airlines, such as Ryan Air, Air Berlin, Wizz Air etc.
There are two ways to reach this airport, through Baden-Baden train station or through Rastatt train station.

First, from Baden-Baden train station
You could take bus route 205 - Baden main station - Baden Airpark
The travel time will be around 30 minutes and the price ticket is 2.80 Euros.

Second, from Rastatt train station
You could take bus route 234 - Rastatt - Baden Airpark
The travel time will be around 30 minutes and the price ticket is 2.80 Euros.

Since the travel time will take some time, please do consider the travel time and bus schedule with your flight.

There is also direct bus from Baden Airport to Karlsruhe train station with bus 140. The price ticket for adult is 9 Euros and for children 5 Euros, one way.

Dusseldorf - Weeze (NRN)
Address : Flughafen-Ring 1, 47652 Weeze, Germany

In front of Airport Weeze

It is a minor international airport, that mainly used by Ryan Air.

To reach airport, you could take train and stop at Weeze Station.
From the station, you could take bus and it will get you to the airport shortly.

Other alternatives, you could stop at Kevelaer Station and take bus to Weeze from there. It might take longer time, but in case you miss the train to Weeze, you still have other way to go there.

The public transport schedule is not 24 hour, and limited from 6 AM - 9.30 PM.
So, please do calculate your flight departure and arrival time.

In my case, I took Ryan Air night flight from Rome to Weeze before. Since I did not aware that they have very limited public transport. So, as soon as I arrived and checked the train schedule, I was kind of panic because we already missed ALMOST all last train and bus. So, we choose to take latest bus to take us to Dusseldorf Airport and spend a night there.
It is more comfortable to spend a night in bigger airport than in smaller one, like Weeze.
At that time, there are barely food / bakery stall there - just funding machine. Maybe they already build some new shops in the past 3 years. Maybe...

Berlin - Schoenefeld (SXF)
Address : Flughafen Schönefeld, 12521 Berlin, Germany

Berlin Schoenefeld Airport (Photo credit to the owner)

There are 2 airports in Berlin, Berlin Tegel and Schoenefeld. Schoenefeld Airport is the smaller airport and the base airport for, Ryan Air, easy Jet and Condor.

Even though it is smaller, but since it is an airport in big city, Berlin - the facilities and public transport from - to airport are quite convenient. This airport has train and bus connections, so it's pretty easy to get here using public transportation.

You could take any S-Bahn or Regional Bahn or bus and stopped at Flughafen Schoenefeld station.
For details, you could access this page on their official website: How to Get Here.

My memory remembers that I used this airport to depart to Stockholm, but strangely I could not remember how is the structure inside the airport or how I get here.

Frankfurt - Hahn (HHN)
Address : 55483 Hahn-Flughafen, Germany

I might forgot the details of this airport, but this is one of my favourite local airport. Though, the public transport you could use to get here is bus, only. But, I remember that the view on the road was beautiful - I really enjoy the ride!

There are many points of pick up to get the bus to Frankfurt Hahn airport. You could see on the picture below:

I vaguely remember where I took my bus before, I think it's either Frankfurt or Mainz.
I used this airport to depart from Germany to Venice, using our beloved low cost carrier - Ryan Air.
Oh yes. I took the bus from Mainz. :)

Bonn - Cologne (CGN)
Address: Kennedystraße, 51147 Köln, Germany

Koln-Bonn airport (Photo credit to the owner)

My favourite local airport ever! This airport is pretty big, looks similar as in Dusseldorf International Airport. They have lots of shops, cafe, and decent public transportation connections.

We could easily jump to train or bus in NRW and stopped at Bonn-Cologne Airport Station.
If you took train, the station is right in front of the airport - which is very convenient.
So, my suggestion, please choose to depart / arrive from / to this airport if your flight has the route to this airport. It will save your time. (except, you will leave to Eastern Europe - better choose airport that is more to the East.)

Before, I use this airport to depart from Germany to Barcelona Girona with Ryan Air.
I forgot the details, but I still remember how I love it that this airport FINALLY has direct train station. (unlike the others). I LIKEE IT!

***

Those are some of the local airports I have visited during my Euro Trip before. Hope this information could be a help for you! :)

Please read also the Local Airports Part II. (soon to be published).

Me. Deserted in a bus station nearby the Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.

  1. Sure thing! How about this:

So glad to know your experience! This airport sounds fantastic with its shops, cafes, and convenient public transportation. Having a direct train station right at the airport is a huge plus. Wish me best of luck for east coast countdown.
